Tonga was the best...

So we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center on Tuesday - it was awesome, but it turned into a looooong day. We got the package that included a tour guide, which was helpful because he took us around to the better presentations for all the islands. The different islands represented are: Hawaii, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, and Marquesas. Hawaii taught how to do the hula - I was terrible! Tonga demonstrated the nose flute (yes, NOSE flute) and got volunteers to try some drumming. New Zealand showed the poi balls and the stick game which I think was really neat. They also make crazy faces bulging out their eyes and sticking out their tongues. We saw the Fiji houses. We saw Tahiti dancing. Samoa was fun to watch because one of their guys climbed a 40 foot tree. They also showed how to skin and milk coconut and brought up people to try skinning coconuts. We didn't really get to see much of Marquesas though.

There was a canoe parade where several of the islands danced. Tahiti (yellow) could rival Shakira in shaking their hips - wow! New Zealand in green was one of the cooler ones with the faces. Samoa in purple/magenta was hilarious - they are known as the happy people and jokesters, so the men on the canoe knock off the canoe pilot. Fiji was neat - the guys had things that looked like axes - they are the canibals, and the girls wear pompom looking balls on their heads. Hawaii was in blue, nothing exciting, but very pretty. Finally, Tonga in red, I think I liked them the best of all because their dancing is very animated and the guys do cool stuff.

And we took a canoe ride and got to see some other cool stuff like the Easter Island statues...

The best part of the whole day was the show at night. Each of the islands did some dancing and then Samoa did some fire stuff

All in all a great day and well worth the money. Anyone who comes to Hawaii HAS to come to the cultural center. I have tons of other pictures from the day, so I've gone ahead and posted them so that you can see them HERE
